<p class="BodyStyle" style="text-align: justify; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: embed;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The expanding role of private military and security companies in contemporary armed conflicts has raised new questions concerning the scope of their responsibility for environmental damage resulting from military operations in conflict zones. The central problem addressed in this study is that, despite the increasing involvement of these companies in support services, protection, logistics, training, and even field operations, international law remains ambiguous in determining the basis of their direct or indirect responsibility for pollution, the destruction of natural resources, and lasting environmental harm. Accordingly, the research question is: On what legal grounds and through which mechanisms may private military and security companies be held responsible for environmental damage arising from military operations? The study aims to clarify the legal framework governing the responsibility of these companies and to assess the adequacy of existing rules under international humanitarian law, international environmental law, and the law of responsibility. The research hypothesis is that, although responsibility may be attributed to these companies under general rules of civil liability, contractual obligations, domestic law, and certain international principles, the absence of a binding and transparent international regime has limited their effective accountability. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method and draws upon library sources and international legal instruments. The findings indicate that the responsibility of these companies is primarily imposed in a fragmented and indirect manner and remains dependent on their home States or contracting States. The existing normative gaps therefore demonstrate the need to establish more explicit mechanisms for prevention, compensation, and the assurance of accountability.</span></p>
